European black shale database

The European-wide black shale database database is set up on a web-based interactive GIS system and contains information about the distribution and characteristics of European black shales.

In the first two years a Sharepoint project website, the database model and a web-viewer has been built. The geochemical data of 1420 wells and 383 outcrops have been gathered for 26 European counties by sub-contractors and by TNO from public sources. In total the data of 19424 samples have been entered into the EBSD. Furthermore, also different type of maps (distribution, depth, thickness, paleogeographic, geological, maturity, TOC) have been gathered and incorporated in the EBSD.  A last phase, focused on the collection of logs, geological/seismic profiles and additional data s.a. temperature and pressure has been finalized by several prioritized countries (Bulgaria, Czech Republic, Denmark, Germany, Hungary, Lithuania, The Netherlands, Romania and Sweden). In the last year TNO worked on a synthesis to evaluate selected target gas shale intervals using mainly scientific criteria.

In addition, a detailed study, using the data from EBSD, on the potential for the Alum Shale, an early Paleozoic shale gas interval in the Baltic area has been finalized .
